Budget > A Frame of Mind (1)

Adjusting spending habits after recording a budget is often the most difficult obstacle that you will encounter on your road to debt freedom because it involves making sacrifices through cut backs and changing the style of life that you have grown accustomed to. Let’s face it, we are all human and humans are creatures of habit. It may take a while to get adjusted to new spending habits. Many of us grow accustomed to providing immediate gratification to our spending impulses.

When adjusting spending habits, you should not only focus on future spending plans, you should also focus on reducing the current obligations that are causing the financial crunch. The approach that you take to “cutting back” is largely dependent on your likes and dislikes and the point you are at in your life. Your approach should depend largely on the timeframe that is set as your goal for getting out of debt. Choose a target date by which you expect to reach your goal. It should be reasonable as compared to your needs and willingness to sacrifice. If you are tolerant to sudden and drastic changes, you can make drastic cut backs that will enable you to get back on your feet and ahead of the game quickly. The ability to endure drastic changes is often dependent on your threshold to the pain that will be cause by the sacrifices that will be made. If you own a home, you can sell the home and move in with family or move to a home or apartment that is less of a drag on your budget, but making drastic changes is not agreeable to every one. If you have extra room in your home, you could take in a roommate and collect rent to increase your income stream. If you determine that your car payment is too high, you can sell the car and purchase a less expensive model or purchase a used car (doing so often helps you reduce your insurance costs). You can temporarily eliminate vacations and weekend travel. You can even obtain a second job to supplement your income.
