Budget > Keeping Goals in Sight
At some time you will have the desire to return
to your old spending habits, but remember that doing so works against your
ultimate goal of getting out of debt. Getting off track will cause you to wait
longer before realizing your goal. When adjusting your spending habits, it is
important you allow for some “leisure money” in your new budget. The purpose of
budgeting is to trim expenditures back to a more reasonable level, not to take
all of the joy out of living. As you pay your bills off, you will experience
progressive stages of success (maybe bringing yourself current paying off a
credit card). As you experience success, it may encourage and motivate you to
work harder at becoming debt free. However, if you celebrate too much with
success, it may create a false feeling that you are completely in control again
and you may lose sight of your goal. When you achieve some success at reducing
your debt, it is ok to rejoice (you deserve it) but it is important that you do
not lose sight of your goal. It may be helpful to post reminders in places
where you will constantly be reminded of your goal of becoming debt free. You
can cut out pictures of images that are symbolic of your goals and the people
that will benefit from reaching those goals. Post them as reminders of the
rewards that will be available when your goals are met. Maybe post a picture of
a house, a picture symbolizing retirement, or a picture of your family. Keep
changing pictures if you have many goals. Its up to you, posting reminders will
help to prioritize and keep your goals in sight (literally).
